A bunch of us went to see Jools Holland at Kew Gardens.

I miss open-air stuff in the summer – actually, what I mean is that I miss it when a lot less people used to go. I used to like going to concerts at Kenwood, opera at Cannizaro Park, Holland Park and Chiswick House. Now, so many people go that it is more of a pain than a pleasure.

I did call Kenwood, one wheelchair year, only to be told that, in my wheelchair, I had to sit with the other wheelchair users on the side so we did not spoil the view of other patrons! I started laughing in disbelief. ‘You cannot be serious? You expect me to sit apart from my friends with a bunch of people I don’t know?’ Yes, they did. ‘Does this rule apply to pushchairs and prams and what about the portable seats people bring in with them?’ No, no, that’s different. ‘In what way?’

Apparently, ‘people’ find wheelchairs, but not pushchairs and prams, objectionable! Well, we really wouldn’t want to upset THEM, would we? I was almost speechless – a rare occurrence! Are there seriously people who have such a problem with wheelchairs? Like life’s not difficult enough for us…

On my trips to Kenwood, and most other such events, everyone lay about chatting, laughing, drinking and eating. Looking at, and listening to, the performers are the secondary entertainments. If I were to be sidelined as suggested, what would be the point of going? I didn’t – like they’ll care - and I never will again. Thankfully, in my opinion, their programmes are nowhere near as good as they used to be!

Kew, however, was a lot of chaotic fun. The pavements are fine. Things got a bit bumpy over the grass but, hey, it would be no pleasure at all if you didn’t nearly fall out of your wheelchair a few times, right?
