We flogged across town to see 4 months, 3 weeks, 2 days last weekend in the Barbican Cinema – the upstairs cinema which is a right pain for access. We had to walk miles via a tower block to get a lift to get to the cinema with someone unlocking doors all the way. Not their fault but a pain. I had forgotten about the staggeringly small screen in this cinema and, as so often, the wheelchair space is right at the back – honestly, I would have had a more cinematic experience at home on our screen.
The film itself had 5 star reviews everywhere and we hated it – both of us. OK, not an upbeat topic – illegal abortion, eastern bloc, Rumania – but Mr Lazarescu (from a similar ‘place’) was really good. This film was just dire. It added nothing to my life. Yes, illegal abortion is ghastly; yes, bartering sex for services is grim; yes, horribly dreary background...and, so? Who needs this amount of realism? Not me.
In the lift, EaZyD said to the amenable crowd, ‘so, what did you think?’ ‘Incredible!’ said one man. EaZyD assumed he meant incredibly bad but it became quickly clear that he meant incredibly good! Awkward silence. I started laughing....what else can you do?
