Emails have been few this year, a year of thought and contemplation to date. Along with many of you, I have been keeping to myself, hoping the chill wind of the much-discussed economic maelstrom will, should it actually materialise, pass quietly on by, touching us lightly, if at all.

I continue to worry, as I wrote earlier in the year, about the impact of the deteriorating economic conditions on those who are reliant on the state for their welfare - events driving me to keyboard on several occasions:
